Soap Nuts

Do you know about soap nuts? If not, you should!

I learnt about them a while ago for use in washing machines in place of laundry detergent. I didn't need them as I use laundry liquid I make from laundry soap, but then later found out that you can use soap nuts for way more!

All purpose cleaner / Dish Liquid / Shampoo

As a general rule - to turn soap nuts into liquid use 25 grams soap nuts to 2 cups of water, bring to the boil and then simmer for 10 minutes.

What you need:

- Soap nuts (buy here)

- Pot

- Sieve

- Funnel

- Bottle to store

Add your water and soap nuts to the pot and bring to the boil. Turn the heat down and simmer for the remaining time (as calculated by the above ratio). Strain and let cool then funnel into your container.

Be aware that the liquid will only last 1-2 weeks so don't make too much in one go. To keep it for long, store it in the fridge (clearly labeled, as it does look delicious).

Washing Machine

Place 5-6 soap nuts in a small muslin bag and place in the washing machine. You can either leave in for the entire was, or take out after the wash cycle/before the rinse. They will do around 10 washes - they will start to look grey and sad when they are finished. Just pop them in your home compost bin.
